Disclosure Barring Services

Enhanced DBS for GPs and Pharmacists

What is DBS?

Disclosure Baring Service is issued after criminal background is checked in England and Wales.  This involves criminal check of a healthcare professional’s background. This is for where the locum lives (and not where locum work is based. Checks include reports from information held by police centralised records. There are four checking levels: Basic, Standard and Enhanced and Enhanced with Barred list check. For GPs and Pharmacist, the Enhanced level is the minimum requirement situable for these positions.

Once a certificate is issued, health care professionals are advised to join the update service, currently at £13/annum. This ensures the checks are reviewed annually without making a new DBS application. The update service has to be joined within 30 days of DBS certicate issue date.

In Scotland, a GP or pharmacist will require to carry out check with Disclosure Scotland. Like the DBS, there are four different checking levels; Basic, Standard and Enhanced and Enhanced with Barred list. The most detailed level of check is called the Protecting Vulnerable Groups [PVG] scheme.

In Northern Ireland, Access NI is required in the checking levels.

Throughout the United Kingdom, the DBS, PVG and Access NI aims to make safer recruitment decisions, and stops unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups including children.
